Quaker Simple Harvest Establishes Farmers Education Fund

Partnership with Farm to Table Initiative Builds on Quaker’s Commitment to Simple, Natural and Wholesome Beginnings at the Breakfast Table

CHICAGO (November 1, 2007) – To build on the launch of new all-natural Quaker Simple Harvest multi-grain hot cereal, Quaker is partnering with Farm to Table, an Earth Pledge initiative dedicated to providing resources to local farmers across the country, to support the demand for local and sustainable food products.

As part of the Farm to Table partnership, Quaker announced the new Quaker Simple Harvest Farmers Education Fund to help further educate farmers about sustainable agriculture. By educating farmers on best practices and new technologies, the Fund offers farmers knowledge and tools to provide wholesome foods to consumers by maintaining the earth’s natural resources and increasing farm profitability. Farmers and consumers can learn more at www.farmtotable.org.

“Quaker has a long history of supporting and educating farmers and agricultural organizations on the principles of improved, safe-crop food production,” said Dave Kimbell, marketing director for Quaker Breakfast. “The Quaker Simple Harvest Farmers Education Fund helps continue our support of farmer education and sustainability efforts.”

Connecting Farmers and Consumers

In addition, Quaker is helping support Earth Pledge’s expansion of www.farmtotable.org, an online network of farmers and producers, farmers markets, restaurants and stores that produce and sell locally grown foods. The expansion to 25 cities across the country will help consumers find the best fresh, seasonal foods in their regions, assist farmers with transitioning to sustainable practices and demonstrate the potential of locally grown food with the help of top chefs.

“We’re pleased to partner with Quaker on this initiative to help strengthen and facilitate the transition to sustainability through the Farmers Education Fund,” said Leslie Hoffman, executive director of Earth Pledge. “By supporting our efforts to educate farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, Quaker is helping to improve consumers’ access to wholesome and natural ingredients.”

Quaker has a long tradition of working closely with farmers, suppliers, and crop researchers in major North American oat-producing regions to promote the advantages of growing oats as an excellent rotation crop. Compared to many other crops, oats are recognized as an excellent crop to limit soil erosion and reduce agricultural chemical usage. Quaker is also committed to reducing its environmental impact through creative solutions for minimizing waste, including using oat hulls as a renewable fuel source. By burning oat hulls for energy instead of coal, greenhouse gas emissions are substantially reduced.
